Salim Kumar's life is a tale

Actor Salim Kumar's life is soon to be turned into a documentary film. Under the banner of Amrithasree Entertainment and Sign Film Society a short docu-film on the actor Frame to to a Protagonist: Salim Kumar' will be released during Christmas time this year.
  The 40-minutes documentary, directed by Anil Sign from
Paravur, has been produced by Sivadasan Amrithasree.
   The switch on of the short docu-film was held on December 3. Explaining why he chose to make the film, director Anil says, " Salim Kumar is a great actor and deserves the position he enjoys in Malayalam film industry. Not because he is a good actor but also because he entered the film industry after facing several challenges and hardships."
  The film focusses almost entirely on the actor's childhood life, rather than his celebrity hood. The documentary will reveal how the actor's heart was initially into singing, and how that ambition was dropped.
    " Though Salim was talented in mimicry, he  always wished to be a singer. He usec to sing 'Pulayanar maniyamma....,a a very famous song in Malayalam, at every stage show and festival. Once his teacher made a disparaging comment about his singing, and that proved to be vital in his decision to start concentrating on mimicry. This eventually paved the way for his entry into films," says Anil.

       The documentary will be completed as soon as we include some more bytes from celebrities, Anil says.

There has been greater recognition today again at another Awards night. There has been the overflowing love and affection of the Sunday fans at Jalsa. There has been another emotional meet with the Ef, led by Renate at the gates of the Sunday fans, crushed, pushed, loss of shoes and a mobile .. but the joy of meeting up with them .. There has been Dhanush singing live for me ‘kolaveri di .. ‘ at the Awards but with different words to suit the occasion. There has been the meetings with colleagues of importance and great standing.
And all of this is in pictures to justify which due to the paucity of time I am unable to post tonight. But I shall tomorrow at the first sounds of the traffic !!
I must get to bed and to the gym tomorrow morning. The body lacks energy and it needs the tread mill, the weights, the breathing .. and more !
So for tonight I shall say a warm ending .. but with the promise of being with all of you again in the morning hour ..

UTV ties up with Sundar C. for ‘Masala Cafe’

Production company UTV Motion Pictures Monday announced its partnership with Tamil director Sundar C. for his comic entertainer “Masala Cafe“, co-produced by his wife, Khushbu Sundar’s Avni Cinemax.
Sundar C., who has a slew of successful films like “Ullathai Alli Tha”, “Mettukudi”, “Arunachalam” and “Anbe Sivam” to his credit, is back to writing and directing with “Masala Cafe”. 

Anna Hazare In A New Move

Anna Hazare on Saturday wrote a fresh letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying doubts have arisen over whether the Lokpal Bill will be passed by December 23, when Parliament's current session gets over. The activist also threatened to go ahead with his proposed fast and jail bharo agitation.

In a four-page letter, he alleged that the government's behaviour was "not at all right" and asked why Dr Singh changed his stand on the Citizens' Charter, despite giving a written assurance that it will be part of the Lokpal bill.

He said in the past few months, Dr Singh had given him assurances through letters that a strong Lokpal Bill will be passed in the winter session of Parliament.

Hazare said in the last one year, the government has given a lot of assurances on the Lokpal Bill but every time, they have betrayed the countrymen.

Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol: Movie Review

Synopsis: When a terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin, the United States government initiates a black ops “ghost protocol“ and disavows the entire Impossible Mission Force. Ethan Hunt and his team are to be blamed for the attack, but are allowed to escape as part of a plan to enable them to operate in the dark, outside of their agency. However, Hunt is warned that if any member of his team is captured during their mission, they will be charged as terrorists planning to incite global nuclear war. Ethan is then forced to work with ex-IMF agent Brandt, who knows more about Hunt and his past than even Hunt himself.

Review: An animated action potboiler that is sure to mind numb even the most avid action movie watcher. The stunt-heavy film is both death and budget defying. Complete nirvana for an action buff as it fluctuates adrenalin levels with commendable twists in its crisply woven plot. 

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt does precisely what he is expected to – runs like he was possessed, leaps like an agile bird, bashes faces unabashedly, violates traffic laws at ease and of course flashes that million dollar smile of his. An almost 50 heartthrob!

 

What’s remarkable is the simplicity underlying all the daredevilry. The action is mind-boggling and director Brad Bird retains this by underplaying the heroism. Cruise spells his mission with a silent subtlety. No over-the-top machismo. He seems like a man who is well versed with the demanding nature of his death inviting mission. Words seem like an intrusion because the action packed adventure directed by animation maverick Brad Bird is seriously animated fare.

 

But all the animation is layered in the slick body language and the wild stunts that the cast boldly executes. In the scale and the scope of the stunts, Brad Bird’s genius springs alive. His fourth film and first live action debut tells you a lot about why back in 1977 Walt Disney invited him to enroll for a mentoring program with them at a tender age of 14. Perhaps they intuitively knew the strength of his path-breaking imagination. One that makes Ethan withstand onslaughts like it was part and parcel of the daily grind life he seems keen to put up with.  He makes him a contemporary superhero who lets his stunts speak for him. The fourth installment in the “Mission Impossible” franchise is definitely worth all the excitement that you have built within you, waiting to unleash it at the cinema nearest to you.

As for the story, here goes. Ethan Hunt is trapped in a Moscow prison for unknown reasons. His Impossible Mission Force Agents Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Jane Carter (Paula Patton) expertly rescue him and rush him next to infiltrate Kremlin, to quick track the bad guys down. But it’s a tad too late as a massive explosion rocks the place and the IMF is blamed for it. The IMF Secretary (Tom Wilkinson) informs Hunt just in time that the President has invoked “Ghost Protocol “ and disabled the IMF in the wake of this disaster. In an urgent bid Hunt, Dunn and Carter , accompanied by Agent Brandt (Jeremy Renner) are on the run to track down the original culprit cum bad guy Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist), a cold blooded nuclear extremist, from starting a nuclear war between Russia and US. The mastermind behind the Kremlin blast which actually involved him escaping at Cruises expense after his theft of a Russian nuclear launch device. Hendricks believes that the world will be at peace if it succumbs itself to nuclear annihilation.  Let’s just say he is a doomsday specialist. The manic hunt for him called for some serious globetrotting that takes the IMF team from Russia to Dubai and finally Mumbai. 

Bird ensures there is an action overdose in each of these destinations. But one worth mentioning is Ethan climbing the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world, eventually dangling from it with one suction-cupped glove is just spectacularly shot. It’s a virtual near death experience. It will definitely compel your jaws to take a bow before its magnitude. Even the climax where Hunt and Hendricks battle it out in a high-tech parking garage, brilliantly recreates Play Station impact onscreen. A lot like a gaming gig, it feels like it’s been sequenced by a live action game remote. 

For all the hoopla surrounding Anil Kapoor’s role in the film, it is hardly worth a mention, it’s a ten minute cameo where he plays a sleazy Indian tycoon Brij Nath, a crucial link to Hendrick who eventually gets seduced and effortlessly bashed by Paula Patton, in a bid to fulfill the last challenge of the impromptu mission. His role can best be described as demeaning and an atypical foolish projection of all things Indian. An unfair but a longstanding oriental trend that surfaces time and again in Hollywood. A far cry from the weightage he received in Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” in which he shared some serious screen space with the cast. He seemed like a silly prop used simply to propel the story forward. Mumbai folks will love the way Cruise leaps ahead of our rush hour traffic, reducing vehicles to standby road toys, almost fulfilling our fantasy onscreen.

Cruise yet again proves that even the most mind boggling and earth shattering action is simply cakewalk for him. The only thing that changes is the suaveness of the gadgets assisting him in all the series. I think it’s unfair to compare it to any of the previous parts since this comes in a league of its own. It’s definitely on par with the part 1 in its sheer magnitude is all I can truly say. Since every sequel has been creatively led by a new director, each like this one expresses a unique flavor of its own.

 

Kudos to Brad Bird who has previously bagged the best animated feature Oscars with his “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille”. In his first action flick, he blends in both, the commercial and the critically uplifting facets that go into creating good cinema. He hammers you with unconventional stunts and the smart alec strategy. The film is completely worth the nerve shaking stupor it can induce, simply with all its slick action gimmicks.

Verdict: Action-packed, suavely creative edge of the seat spy thriller

Karan Johar’s film was titled Short Term Shaadi was it was changed to Ek Main aur Ekk Tu

Though the producers are saying that it was done as they wanted a complete Hindi title there may be more to it than meets the eye.

It seems that Kareena’s engagement and possibly marriage would be around that period and it would have been socially incorrect move to have a film titled “short term shaadi” releasing during that period which stars Kareena in the lead role.

Even though the film is about a one night marriage and the title “short term shaadi” was an apt one for the film, it was changed to Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.

It would have been an embarrassment for Kareena Kapoor. If short term shaadi was the name of the film and would have released so close to her engagement/ marriage period.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is about a fun filled night in which the boy and the girl get married only to realize in the morning the seriousness of it.

Kareena was not even consulted in this whole thing and the title of the film was changed from Short term Shaadi to Ek Main aur Ekk Tu.

Ek Main Ek Tu directed by Shakun Batra, a valentine releases sees the youngest Khan pairing with Kareena Kapoor for the first time. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu releases on Feb 10.

Chinese movie 'Under the Hawthorn Tree'  is the inaugural film

The 16th edition of the international Film Festival of Kerala(IFFK) will begin on friday with the gala screening of Chinese movie "Under the Hawthorn Tree". Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the week-long festival at a function to be held at Nishagandhi Open Air Auditorium at 6pm.
Minister for Cinema K B Ganeshkumar  will preside over the function in which Bollywood actress Jaya Bachchan will be the chief guest. A total of 196 films from 65 countries will be exhibited under 15 different categories in IFFK 2011. Prominent film personalities including veteran Malayalam actor Madhu will be honoured in the retrospective section.
Films of French director Robert Bresson, Japanese directors Nagisa Oshima and Yasuzo Masumura, Greek film maker Theodoros Angelopoulos and American film maker Adolfas Mekas are also scheduled to be screened at the retrospective session.
The Indian film section and Malayalam film section include seven movies each. Seventy three films from different countries will be screened in 'WORLD CINEMA' category. Seven films are to be exhibited in 'Homage Section'. The IFFK 2011 will pay tribute to Mani Kaul, Raol Ruiz, Tareeque Masud and Elizabeth Taylor.
A package of eight films from the first production house of post war Germany- DEFA- will be screened in the 'Defa section'.
The inaugural ceremony will be followed by a cultural show- As destiny's Dice- directed by T K Rajeevkumar. A project to promote Malayalam cinema-'Marketing Malayalam cinema' will be organised as part of the festival. As a tribute to actor Aranmula Ponnamma, script writer Sarangapani, music director Johnson,lyricist and poet Mullanezhy, writer Kakkanadan, and actor Machan Varghese,the touring talkies will exhibit their films from December 9 to 14.
The festival movies will be screened at 11 venues in the city including Nishagandhi.

Pakistani actree Veena Malik defended on Saturday her front cover phots for men's magazine FHM, where she appeared with ISI tattooed on her arm, but denied the photo shoot involved any nudity. The actress said the original idea had been Kabeer Sharma's, editor of FHM's Indian edition. "He told me that (the tattoo) will be very BOLD and will cover the upper portion of the body, which it did not.I agreed to a photo shoot and having an ISI tattoo in a humorous way but I did not have any nude photos.
